Summer Safety Tips for Senior Dogs

Keeping senior dogs safe and comfortable in the summer takes a little extra planning. But, it can make a big difference in their health and happiness. Why Heat Is Harder on Senior Dogs

As dogs age, their hearts, lungs, and circulation aren’t as efficient, so they can’t cool themselves as well through panting. Arthritis, excess weight, and chronic conditions like heart or respiratory disease also make it harder for them to handle high temperatures and humidity. Additionally, many senior dogs don’t move to shade or water as quickly and may ignore early signs of overheating. Short-nosed breeds (like Bulldogs, Pugs, and Boston Terriers) are at especially high risk and often need very limited outdoor time on hot days.

 

 

 

 

Smart Summer Schedules

Adjusting your dog’s daily routine is one of the best ways to protect them.

• Walk early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures and pavement are cooler.

• Keep outings shorter and lower-impact; think gentle strolls and sniff walks instead of long hikes or runs.

• Always avoid the hottest part of the day and keep senior dogs indoors during heat waves or extreme humidity.

• Never leave your dog in a parked car, even “just for a minute” as temperatures rise dangerously fast and can be fatal.

Keeping Older Dogs Cool and Comfortable

Small environmental changes can keep your senior dog cooler and more relaxed.

• Make sure fresh, cool water is available at all times, indoors and out, and bring water on every walk.

• Provide shaded, well-ventilated rest spots; use fans or air conditioning to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature.

• Use cooling tools like pet-safe cooling mats or damp towels for them to lie on if they enjoy it.

• Protect paw pads by avoiding hot pavement, sand, and asphalt; choose grass or dirt, or use booties if hot surfaces are unavoidable.

• Keep their coat brushed and consider a light trim if appropriate, but don’t fully shave them; the coat helps insulate and protect from sunburn.​

During pet sitting visits, we monitor indoor temperature, refresh water bowls, and help your senior dog settle in a cool, comfortable spot to rest.

Watch for Signs of Overheating and Heatstroke

Senior pets can move from “a little too warm” to a true emergency quickly, so early recognition is critical. Call your vet or an emergency clinic immediately if you see:

• Excessive panting or drooling, especially if it doesn’t ease with rest and shade.

• Bright red, pale, or dark gums, or a very rapid heartbeat.

• Weakness, stumbling, collapse, or seeming “out of it” or disoriented.

• Vomiting or diarrhea (sometimes with blood), or signs of distress and agitation.

While you’re contacting a vet, move your dog to a shaded or air-conditioned area, offer small amounts of cool (not ice-cold) water, and gently wet them with cool water, especially on the belly, paws, and groin.

Extra Care for Comfort and Mobility

Summer comfort isn’t only about temperature; it’s also about how your senior dog feels moving through their day.

• Provide soft, supportive beds away from direct sun and in cooler areas of the home.

• Use non-slip rugs or mats to help arthritic dogs navigate tile or hardwood floors safely.​

• Help with steps, porches, or getting in and out of cars using ramps, slings, or harnesses.​

• Keep a consistent, calm routine; loud events like fireworks and crowded gatherings can be stressful for senior pets, so offer a quiet, cool retreat indoors.
