The event was very successful and resulted in over 1,000 pets adopted in one day! NBC Universal took the campaign national the following year and it has now become an annual event across the nation.

Out of those 6.3 million shelter animals, 920,000 of them will be euthanized (390,000 dogs and 530,000 cats). The sad truth is that most animal shelters can’t keep these animals forever due to a lack of space, resources, and staff. Essentially, the odds are stacked against most shelter animals.
