Fire safety is something we are often taught as children. However, most people are not taught pet fire safety. Pets rely on their owners to keep them happy, healthy, and safe. This applies to emergency situations, like house fires, too. Thankfully July 15th is observed as National Pet Fire Safety Day!

History Of The Holiday

Pet Fire Safety Day was founded in 2009 by the A.K.C. (American Kennel Club) and ADT Security. They created this holiday to help educate pet owners about safety measures to protect their pets. To most pet owners, pets are their most precious asset. That’s why July 15th is dedicated to keeping them safe in the event of a house fire. 

How To Protect Your Pets From House Fires

The best way to protect your furry family from house fires is to take preventative measures. Here are just a few examples of ways you can prevent house fires and keep your pets safe in the event of a house fire. 

Preventing House Fires Caused By Pets

The National Fire Protection Association estimates that nearly 1,000 house fires are accidentally started by homeowner’s pets every year. Here are a few ways to prevent your home from being one of them. Remove stove knobs or protect them with covers. Use flameless candles instead of real ones. Keep your pets confined and away from potential fire hazards with crates or baby gates.

Additionally, always extinguish open flames when pets are around. This includes candles, cooking appliances, and fireplaces. Pets are naturally curious around open flames, so never leave them unattended around any open-flame source. 

Have An Evacuation Plan In Place

House fires happen when you least expect them. That’s why it’s so important to have an evacuation plan in place. Be sure to include your pets in this evacuation plan too. Appoint yourself or a family member to be responsible for finding your pets and assist them in the evacuation process. Your pets probably won’t find their own way out, so it’s important that someone helps them get out in a fire emergency. 

Additionally, it’s a good idea to run fire drills in your home with your family and pets. Even just a few fire drills a year will help everyone be more prepared for a fire emergency. Again, be sure to include your pets in these fire drills. Keep leashes and/or harness near the exits so you can quickly and easily get your pets to safety.

In the event of a house fire, emergency responders will show up to help rescue you and your family. This includes your furry family. We encourage you to make their jobs easier by using pet rescue alert stickers. You simply apply the alert sticker to the windows where your pet would most likely be (like a specific bedroom or living space for them).
