Discussing Some Of The Most Interesting And Unique Facts About Dogs
Dogs are truly wonderful pets that fill our lives with joy and enrich our everyday experiences. These very special creatures have been a part of human society for tens of thousands of years. They are truly man’s best friend.
In honor of this beautiful relationship between humans and dogs, this article will discuss some fun and interesting facts about our furry friends. These random fun facts are in relation to dogs, our relationship with dogs, and how we interact with them.
Dog Ownership
Dogs are the most popular pet in the U.S. The A.V.M.A. (American Veterinary Medical Association) reports that 62 million U.S. households own dogs. That makes up 44.6 percent of all U.S. households owning dogs.
Additionally, surveys show that 45% of U.S. dogs sleep in their owner’s bed. It seems Americans certainly love to cuddle with their furry friends.
A Dog’s Perspective
It’s a common misconception that dogs can only see in black & white. This is not the case. Vancouver EcoVillage reports that dogs can see on a blue and yellow scale. However, they cannot distinguish between green and red.
Additionally, dogs have better night vision than humans. Studies show that a dog’s eyes can take in information 25% faster than humans. This is what makes them so skilled at catching and retrieving balls, toys, and frisbees.
A Dog Nose Best
It’s no secret that dogs have an incredible sense of smell. But, just how powerful is their sense of smell? To put it into perspective, a dog’s nose has around 300 million receptors. By comparison, a human nose has only 5 million receptors. This is equivalent to a dog’s nose being 60 times stronger than a human.
Furthermore, a dog’s nose is so powerful that it can even sense heat and thermal radiation. This allows both deaf and blind dogs to still successfully navigate through the world around them. Additionally, a dog’s nose print is unique to each dog, similar to a person’s fingerprints.
Puppy Life
Dogs are considered puppies from the time they are born to about 2 years old. When puppies are first born, they are born both deaf and blind. This makes them very reliant on their mother for food, guidance, and care. A puppy’s eyes won’t open until around 14 to 21 days old.
Additionally, puppies don’t fully develop their sense of hearing until about three weeks old. Puppies rely heavily on their sense of smell during their first few weeks of life. This is because their sense of smell is their most powerful sense for navigating the world around them.
Dog Breeds
The F.C.I. (Fédération Cynologique Internationale) recognizes a total of 339 different dog breeds. However, the A.K.C. (American Kennel Club) recognizes a total of 200 dog breeds. This does not account for mixed-breeds, a.k.a. mutts.
As of 2022, the most popular dog breed in the U.S. was the French Bulldog. The Australian Shepherd is not actually from Australia. They are an American breed.
Additionally, a Bloodhound’s sense of smell is so accurate that the results of their tracking can be used in a court of law. Greyhounds can beat a cheetah in a race. While cheetah’s can reach speeds of 70 mph, they can only maintain it for about 30 seconds. However, a Greyhound can reach speeds of 35 mph for up to 7 miles.
