Discussing Why National Adopt A Cat Month Is So Important And How You Can Get Involved

June is a very important month for cats and cat lovers. June is not only a peak summer month, but it is widely known and celebrated as Adopt A Cat Month. Not familiar with Adopt A Cat Month? Then look no further because ParaMount Pet Care has you covered. This article will cover everything you need to know about this wonderful feline themed holiday. We will cover the history of the holiday, the importance of the holiday, and how you can get involved.

The History

Adopt A Cat Month was originally founded by The American Humane Association in 1974. The holiday itself was created to encourage and promote people to adopt shelter cats as opposed to buying them. The amount of shelter cats in the U.S. that are in need of a good home is seriously alarming. According to the A.S.P.C.A., roughly 3.2 million cats enter U.S. shelters every year. Adopt A Cat Month aims to help these shelter cats find a quality home with a quality family.

An Important Holiday

It’s not a coincidence that June was picked to be Adopt A Cat Month. Most cats tend to reproduce around this time of the year. Considering mother cats produce an average of 4 to 8 kittens in a litter, it’s no surprise that animal shelters take in a lot of cats/kittens during the month of June. Animal shelters provide a great service for homeless/unwanted animals across the country. However, most animal shelters have limited resources and space. They can only house and care for these animals for so long.

The Sad Facts

Animal shelters are designed to be temporary residences for animals and they can only accommodate them for so long. This is due to a lack of resources, space, and staff/volunteers in animal shelters. The A.S.P.C.A. reports that out of the 3.2 million cats that enter U.S. shelters every year, around 530,000 of them are euthanized. This is a truly grim and tragic statistic. But, these numbers can be significantly diminished by encouraging adoption over buying.

How You Can Help

There are many ways you can get involved with this amazing pet themed educational holiday. One of the best ways is to adopt a cat yourself! But, don’t make such a decision lightly. Being a pet owner is a huge responsibility and should only be done if you have the appropriate time and resources. Another way to get involved is to spread the word about Adopt A Cat Month. Share this article with others and be sure to tell everyone you know on social media about this incredible holiday that helps cats everywhere.
