Remembering The Importance Of Proper Dog Training

2023 is here! There’s no better way to ring in the new year than by celebrating National Train Your Dog Month this January. January is known for fresh starts and getting back into good habits. Teaching your dog good habits is an excellent way to encourage yourself to stick to good habits as well. This article will discuss everything you need to know about National Train Your Dog Month. Covering the basics of at-home dog training, how to find a professional trainer, and the importance of the holiday.

Why Have A Holiday For Dog Training?

Like most awareness based pet themed holidays, it exists for good reason. According to the A.V.M.A. (American Veterinary Medical Association), over 38% of U.S. households own a dog. That equals out to be 48,255,413 homes that have at least one dog. That’s a lot of dogs! While dogs are beautiful creatures, they are still animals that need proper training. It is true that dogs have been successfully domesticated over thousands of years of trial and error. However, they can still be dangerous animals if they are not properly trained and disciplined. Some breeds of dogs can reach over 100 lbs and can have a powerful bite. It’s scary to think what an untrained 100+ lb dog is capable of in the wrong situation. The purpose of this holiday is to remind dog owners everywhere how important it is to properly train your dog. An untrained dog is a huge risk to itself and those around it.

DIY Dog Training

Training your dog at home is not an easy endeavor. But, it will save you money and help you build a closer relationship with your dog. When it comes to at home dog training, there are some basics you will need to know.

Proper Equipment:

Invest in a quality dog collar or harness that properly fits your furry friend. It should be secure, yet comfortable. Next, invest in a quality leash for your dog. It should be sturdy and comfortable to hold. Avoid using retractable leashes for dog training as they offer less control over your dog. Lastly, pick up some quality dog treats. You will need them to reward your dog for good behavior. You can pick up small training treats at the pet store or preferably use “high value” treats such as tiny cut up pieces of chicken or turkey breast.

Training Method:

The three basic methods of dog training are The Scientific Method, The Traditional Dominance Method, and The Positive Reinforcement Method. The method you use to train your dog is up to you. However, the effectiveness of these methods will vary depending on the dog’s personality, history, and breed. We prefer to use the Positive Reinforcement Method for most dogs. This method encourages good behavior and also helps with overall socialization. For more info about the different methods of dog training, check out this article on care.com.

Plan Out Training Sessions:

Schedule out training sessions with your dog. In order for your dog to properly learn, you must train with them everyday. Ideally 2 or 3 training sessions everyday for about 10 to 20 minutes. This may seem like a lot of time, but practice makes perfect. It doesn’t have to be the same time everyday, but consistency is an essential part of the learning process.

Be Patient:

Dog training is not an easy endeavor. It will take a lot of trial and error before your dog shows signs of improvement. Remember, you are the dog’s owner, trainer, and friend. They are relying on you to teach them good behavior and discourage bad behavior. Take your time, be patient, and don’t give up. Your furry friend is counting on you.
