Taking An In-Depth Look At Some Of The Most Popular Dog Breeds In The U.S. As Of 2023

It’s no surprise that Americans love dogs! According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (A.V.M.A.), there are approximately 76,811,305 registered dogs in the U.S. as of 2017. That makes up about 38.4% of U.S. households have dogs. With more than one-third of the country owning dogs, it’s safe to say that we love our dogs. However, it bears the question. What are the most popular breeds of dogs? This article will discuss the top 5 most popular breeds of dogs and what makes them so popular.

How Many Dog Breeds Are There?

So how many dog breeds are there? The answer will vary depending on who you ask. On a global scale, there are 339 breeds of dogs according to the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI). However, the American Kennel Club (A.K.C.), only recognizes 199 dog breeds. For the purposes of this article, we will be using information presented from the A.K.C. and their 2022 surveys on the most popular dogs in the U.S.

#5 Poodles

Taking the number 5 spot is the poodle. Poodles are very recognizable for their curly, low-allergen coats. Their fur coats are typically white, black, or apricot. Poodles are athletic, eager to please, and are considered one of the smartest breeds of dogs in the world. The 3 main size categories of poodles are standard (more than15 inches tall), miniature (less than 15 inches tall), and toy (less than 10 inches tall). Poodles are very trainable and are a common sight at dog shows.

#4 German Shepherds

The number 4 spot goes to the German shepherd breed. German shepherds are commonly known as the all-purpose working dog. They are often used as military dogs, search-and-rescue dogs, and police dogs. German shepherds make great working dogs because of their loyal personality, strong physique, and exceptional trainability. German shepherds are often sought out because they make great family pets, but also serve as steadfast guardians.

Golden Retriever

#3 Golden Retrievers

One of the most recognizable dog breeds is the golden retriever. As the name implies, golden retrievers have a beautiful golden colored coat of fur. They are very loyal dogs that are always eager to please their owners. Because of this, golden retrievers are often used as service dogs. This includes guide dogs, hearing dogs, seizure response dogs, and more. Golden retrievers are sturdy, muscular dogs that have kind eyes and big hearts. Out of the thousands of does ParaMount Pet Care has cared for, we have never met a mean golden retriever.

The second most popular dog breed in the U.S. is the Labrador retriever. Labs are high-spirited, outgoing, and very affectionate. They have dense fur coats that range in colors from black, yellow, and chocolate. These dogs are notoriously friendly and typically make excellent family dogs. Additionally, labs are very athletic and enthusiastic when it comes to play time. These dogs have lots of energy and require a great deal of playtime and stimulation. In essence, a perfect family dog.

French Bulldog

#1 French Bulldogs

Finally, the most popular dog breed in the U.S. is the French bulldog. This small breed of dog has become exceptionally popular over the past few years. The French bulldog resembles that of the regular bulldog, but much smaller. However, they still sport the iconic large “bat ears.” They have large square heads with heavy face wrinkles above their short nose. French bulldogs possess a small, stocky build with overall short hair. They typically don’t bark much, but make great watchdogs. French bulldogs require little exercise and typically get along well with other animals. They are truly one-of-a-kind dogs.
